The Reamer flies to Silver
he Somerset Road Club race team have just returned home from a very rewarding trip to the Spanish island of Mallorca, where they where competing in the European Master's cycling championships. The team consisted of Greg Sandy, Kelvin Price, Leigh Pinchen and Simon Coles.
The races, in age group categories were contested on a fast, energy sapping circuit around Playa de Palma and were run off at speeds in excess of 30 mph. From the start of the race the action was electric with the road club riders in the main moves. The national team from Spain rode a controlling tempo and countered any decisive moves.
Greg Sandy was well placed in the early breaks of the day and was defensively protected by team SRC, but the bigger squads realised the danger of letting a former champion go clear and by the end of the sixth lap it was obvious to all that the race would end in a mass bunch sprint and this would work in the favour of both Kelvin and Greg.
Entering the final stages of the race with well under 1 km to the finish both Greg and Kelvin where fantastically positioned near the front of the 100 strong peleton. Unfortunately Greg was checked up into the barriers by one of the Spanish riders and had nowhere to go but Kelvin, seeing a great opening, made his move for the line. With a truly great burst of speed Kelvin (The Reemer) Price claimed a superb silver medal in the 30-35 age group.
It was a very special day for Kelvin and a great reward for the huge effort and training that he had been putting in prior to the trip. The race team were supported by other club members and a wonderful week in the winter sun was had by all.
