South West Cicruit Race Champion

The 20th September saw the largest gathering of Elite riders in the South West for the South West Circuit Race Championships. The event was held at Merryfield Airstation a large airfield ideal for circuit racing.

Circuit races are usually held at race tracks or airfields and are generally flat and fast. They are often technical and require an ability to accelerate and decelerate very quickly and repeatedly whilst watching every move.

The race was longer than most circuit races at a time of 90 mins + 1 lap. I used this to my advantage and felt that an early attack would probably succeed as other riders may feel it would be too early to go. As soon as the flag was dropped from the lead car I drifted over to the right side of the track and gently accelerated rather than a full attack. I felt that a gentle roll away would be more successful. This first roll away failed but a few seconds later I repeated the move and this time it stuck with A Somerset RC rider following my wheel.

This move stayed away for about 30 mins with only a 15 second gap until James Williams ES Torigini and Greg Sandy SRC made a move from the bunch and bridged the gap. This was then followed by John Wyn Achva Limoux.

This then became the winning move of the race and this group managed to stay away from the ever chasing bunch right until the last lap. It was at this time that I felt extremely tired. I knew that if I left it to a bunch sprint that I would lose against Williams and Sandy.

These two were still taking turns in the move halfway round the last lap so were happy to wait for the bunch sprint. I missed a turn and gathered myself. This time I did attack with force and built a small gap. I then waited to see if there was a chase but as I thought Williams and Sandy looked at each other whilst Wynn was unable or unwilling to do anything.

As I approached the last corner I then saw that Sandy was now chasing on his own and quickly chasing me down. It was however too little and too late. I was quite a way out as I began celebrating.

I was awarded a BCF medal and a Jersey to wear for one year.

Ilton E 12 Crit Won by Greg Sandy

A really tough race... Lots of riders felt it was the right thing to do to mark Neal Coleman KFS. The wiley old Greg Sandy made an early move with five other riders whislt the bunch marked each other out of contention.

It was not until later that Coleman with with James Williams hot on his heels got away for a minor placing

A little attempt at camera work whilst climbing. Not heard the sound so apologies if there is any swearing... I did a four hour ride today pretty steady and then finished off with 5 intervals and five sprints on Billacombe road to finish. Well done to Jamie T who is only just back from injury and hung on.

Soreen are now providing the fuel for the premier cycling team in the South West.

Stephen Ferguson pictured on the left has new found oomph since trying the new soreen Go bars. In his first ever road race he managed to gain 6th whilst James Smith managed another top four place in the Elite circuit race at Ilton Somerset.

" I am sure the quick fire fuel from Soreen helped me in the final sprint"

The finest of the International Masters and Cycle-Masters circuit returns to Majorca once again to dispute the 2008 Balearic Islands International Masters Cycling Week, which celebrates this year its 11th Edition.

From the 5th to the 11th October, our island will play host to a competition which, over the years, has come to be recognised as one of the major events of the Amateur Trial Calendar.

The Balearic Islands International Masters Cycling Week includes three different competitions, with different classifications and prices per each one. In addition, Organization establishes Two Big Prizes, for each winners of the races to be disputed: Master 50 – 55 – 60 – 65 and Cycle-Masters – Master 30 – 35 – 40 – 45, being the winners those cyclists who participate and reach the best classification per points in the three races that compose the XI International Masters Cycling Week, according to rules designed by the Organization. The Big Prize consists of one-week travel to Punta Cana for two people in all inclusive basis.

Like the previous edition, the calendar will start with the celebration of the European Cup, on Sunday.

The entire calendar will be the following:

- XIV European Masters Road Race Cup, Sunday October 5th.
- XII International Trophy for Masters Palmanova – Magaluf, Monday October 6th.
- XI Tour of Majorca for Masters, October 8th – 11th.

Over the last years, the number of participants, countries and competition levels have been increasing, making of this event an obligated meeting for all amateur cycling lovers

MY MAIN WORRY IS NOT GETTING DROPPED!!!!
