CERTINI AIMING TO DEFEND SOUTH WEST TITLE

11:50 - 27 March 2007
A cycling team who were ranked number one in their first-ever competitive campaign are fighting to keep their title. The Plymouth-based Certini Road Racing Team racked up enough points in their first year to be ranked number one in the South West. Now the team will be defending their title against all-comers in the year ahead. The team has just received a boost with a sponsorship package from the Certini Bicycle Store, which is based in Saltash. One of the team's riders, Rob Willcocks, said Certini were confident of retaining their National British Cycling Federation South West division title this season, which ends in mid-October.But Willcocks said the team faced a tough challenge from competitors. The Certini team started off with 10 members, while bigger outfits such as Tiverton-based Mid Devon can command number of up to 40 riders.Willcocks said: "This season is just starting, but last season we just entered as many events as we could to build up our points."We just entered as many races in the South West region as possible."The key is work together as a team, to get as many points as we can."This season, we're going to have teams trying to win the title - particularly the Mid Devon team, who we took the title off last year."What we are aiming to do is to keep on top of things. There were teams who were close to us last season who will be working to get the title back."We can't go any further in the competition, but we will definitely be working hard to keep our title and remain the top-ranked team in the South West."Willcocks said one of the key elements of the team's title defence would be each rider's fitness. He said: "It's a personal thing to better your own level of fitness, but we are pretty focused people who are totally dedicated to the sport."The team was formed after a group of cyclists got together and decided to take their sport to a new height. One of the team members is Kairn Stone, Plymouth's top distance runner and triathlete.Willcocks himself was attracted to the team after his exploits in the triathlon. He said: "I started in triathlons and the guys I train with asked me if I was interested."We have got one or two new members this season and they are very strong cyclists, so it's looking good."

Mixed Fortunes for www.team-certini.co.uk

Keith Lilley gains third in Legstretchers Wales and Kairn stone gains a 15th. An early start did not put of K and K from travelling to Wales to take part in the Legstretchers. This Elite 1 2 race began at a fast pace and did not abate. Keith managed to get in an early break and stayed away the whole race.

James Smith and Gary Andrews of www.team-certini.co.uk also travelled to race with Elites but did not fair so well. Gary Andrews had a crash on lap one causing major damage to his helmet and some minor road rash otherwise well. James Smith managed to get in to what tunred out to be the winning break but could not hold on and faded back in to the bunch. A certain Marcin Bialoblocki won yet again now making him the highest ranked 1st cat in the country!
Local Time Trial Lizard 30 was won easily by Sean Childs. Rob Scott won the 18 year old category and is developing quickly.
Chris Scott gains CTT scholarship and will race in Belgium this year.

BIALOBLOCKI UNDER THREAT FROM RESURGENT CERTINI

Kairn Stone

Marcin Bialoblocki Polish ex professional Road Racer is a marked man in the South West Road Race scene but seems able to win races with ease. Noticeably however Kairn Stone Team Certini in his first year as a Roadie is making remarkable inroads and may soon be challenging the infamous "betablocker".

MDCC TAKE EARLY LEAD!!

South West Team Road points competition is being clearly won at the moment by MDCC, although they have only two points scorers while so early on in the season Team Certini already have two.

Andy Parker Chairman of MDCC has recently come back to race as a 2nd cat after watching his club beaten last year. This year he has already scored the majority of MDCC points but has a difficult task in stopping the strong Certini team.

Bikinmotion are also strong with Alex Fitzgerald scoring for fun......

Don't be a DOPE!!

The International Cycling Union presented its new anti-doping programme called '100% Against Doping” in Paris on Friday, as they try and regain the credibility of professional cycling after years of major scandals. UCI President Pat McQuaid unveiled the new programme, pointing out that 100% refers to the coverage of out of competition and pre-race tests, of riders tested, and the fact that the tests will be carried in total agreement with riders and teams. “The 100% Against Doping initiative represents a quantum leap forward for the cycling world in its efforts to fight doping,” McQuaid claimed. “Our objective is clear: to give cycling the best anti-doping programme in the world. Only clean riders should win; those who cheat should be caught; those considering trying to cheat should be discouraged. Together we can eliminate doping from our sport.” The UCI programme should not be confused with UK Sport's '100% ME' athlete education programme being promoted by British Cycling's Olympic Academy riders now based in Italy. Although some sections of the '100% Against Doping' programme are still vague, it means all professional riders will be face out of competition blood and urine tests to deter the use of EPO, as well as pre-race tests and traditional after race testing. Blood profiling of all riders will also be done to fight the use of blood tranfusions, with some riders also facing urine profiling. Riders will also agree to DNA samples being taken and give their consent to their DNA being used to identify blood during police or disciplinary investigations. All the teams will sign a code of conduct that will detail the punishment for riders and teams caught doping. The costs of the programme will be shared across the sport with the UCI paying a large amount but with the 20 ProTour teams also paying £20,000 each, and smaller teams also contributing. 100% Aganist Doping Programme summary: -Unannounced out-of-competition tests for 100 % of riders. -Blood tests for 100 % of riders. -Creation of an individual profile for 100 % of riders. -Development of new tests in cooperation with 100 % of riders. -Agreement to provide DNA by 100 % of riders. -The same code of conduct for 100 % of teams. -Creation of an Advisory Board with imput from across the sport.

Marcin took the win again today in the Springtime Pursuits. Although he was followed very closely by Andrew Parker and a resurgent www.team-certini.co.uk taking 4 - Rob wilcocks - 5 Kairn Stone and 6 James Smith. As far as the battle between Mdcc and Certini it is certainly not over.

National level athletes are competing every weekend in the South West Area and we never see anything in the "Herald" or other papers but if a local pub team scores a goal well that is everywhere. This site is dedicated to bringing you news of local, National and International Cycling events including video.

With every post you can leave a comment good or bad. If you need your event advertised let me know at chiefdocster@gmail.com and I will help.

This is our sport and we love it!

SCOTT BROTHERS JOIN FORCES!!

Sunday sees the two most promising youngsters in the area team up as seniors for what would seem to be their first serious attempt at winning a local time trial. They will be facing stiff opposition though in the shape of Greg Sandy and Stu Dodd of Team Tor 2000 and Julius Jennings and James Williams of a mixed team.

Ten miles suits the youngsters better but have they the raw power to turn over the favourites? When interviewed Rob Scott spoke of his nervousness but strong desire to get his first win this year after coming so close in the Hilly 13 earlier this month.

Current odds are

2-1 Sandy-Dodd

4-1 Jennings and Williams

10-1 for the Scott brothers good odds.
